  • Deepavali is a Hindu religious holiday observed on the night of the full moon in October/November. It marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the New Year according to the Hindu calendar.
  • In Hinduism, Deepavali is a celebration of the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair.
  • Deepavali is also known as Dussehra, which means ten days. On the tenth day of the month of Bhadrapada, the goddess Lakshmi descends to earth in her vehicle Pushpak Viman and blesses people with wealth, prosperity, and happiness.
  • The word Deepavali comes from two words – Deepa meaning ‘light’ and Valli meaning ‘time’. Thus, Deepavali literally translates to ‘the time of light.’
  • Deepavali is traditionally celebrated on the night of the new moon in October/November when the moon is at its fullest. However, some Hindus celebrate Deepavali on any night between September 15th and November 14th.
  • Deepavali is celebrated across India and Nepal. People decorate their homes, businesses, temples, and public places with diyas (lamps), candles, fireworks, rangoli (ritual designs drawn using colored rice flour), and sweets.

  • There are many traditions associated with Deepavali. One of them is the exchange of gifts. People buy each other small gifts called prasadam. These gifts may be food items like fruits, dry fruits, nuts, jaggery, kheer, etc., or they may be flowers, incense sticks, or even gold jewelry.
  • Another tradition is the offering of prayers to Goddess Lakshmi. People pray to Goddess Lakshmi to bring them wealth, prosperity, and success.
  • Many people fast on Deepavali. Fasting is a way of showing respect to God and asking Him to help us achieve our goals.
  • Deepavali is often celebrated with family gatherings. People gather together and enjoy delicious foods, listen to music, play games, and spend quality time with loved ones.
